Welcome back to "Seams Like Home!"

Remember my flooded quilting room floor?
While waiting for my new floor  I thought I'd paint some of my furniture when dripping paint on the floor was a non-issue.

And I think you know by now, I LOVE COLOR! 

Here are my two bookcases.

The color? BLAH!

The cure? Bright Green!

  

There, isn't that better?  Bright green bookcases to go up against my Bright Blue walls.  YES, Perfect.

Now for some special touches.  Vinyl from Gloriouscolor.com  to line the inside back of the bookcases.

Cut to fit and then glue it down.

Cool huh!  Wait there's more.

Add the rest of the shelves and

TA DA! The finished project. 

All that's left is to slide them around the corner into place, anchor them down and load them with Quilt books.

Dreamy Hexagons Borders No. 2 & 3

Welcome Back to Seams Like Home!

Here's the second border on the medallion quilt "Dreamy Hexagons".   There are two fabrics creating 36 squares that create the border. From a distance the pattern of the blocks is lost since the colors are so close in value, even though the prints are different.

 

This is a close up so you can see the two fabrics and the pattern.

Now on to border number 3.

Using strips of "Feathers" by Phillip Jacobs, and cornerstones from the "Shot Cotton" we used for one of the hexagons in the medallion center, I've made border 3.

Yay! Finally a really Quick and Easy Peasy border.  Maybe the designer planned it that way because now I am going on to the  most time consuming border of this quilt.  The next border, no. 4, is made up of 16 patch blocks and setting triangles.  The directions say to cut the fabric up into individual squares.  Holy Moly, I don't do it that way, I use strips to make my 16 patch.  It's a lot faster and easier that way.  It still will take some time, but as the Terminator said; I will be back!

 (Hopefully with a finished border no. 4!)

Dreamy Hexagons Part 5, The First Border Is Done.

Welcome back to SEAMS LIKE HOME!

Continuing with the Dreamy Hexagon Quilt.  The center Medallion is done.  All Hexi's have been hand sewn together then appliqued on to the "Brassica" cabbages and appliqued onto the background "Jupiter".


Border number one is strips of the fabric named "Flame Stitch" from the Kaffe Fassett collection.  The cornerstones are the smaller cabbages from "Brassica".  It was a fast border to make. The only difficulty was in cutting "Flame Stitch"  since we have to be careful to save enough for border number 5.


Now I have to sew together the "Picotte Poppies" and "Aboriginal Dot" fabrics to make 36 squares.
That's going to take me a while so I'll be back with more once border number 2 is ready to go.

I do wish you could see this in person, the colors are WONDERFUL!

Welcome back to SEAMS LIKE HOME!

March is here, it's hard to believe.  Since February is always a short month, March sneaks up on me.

Time for a March Quilt:

This is called "Welcome to my Garden".   I should call this my Chocolate Easter Bunny quilt.  I've always got CHOCOLATE on my mind.  I LOVE that the background is olive green pillow ticking.  It was difficult to work with the stripes, getting them all to match, but it was worth it. It was also my first time binding a scalloped border.

  This is one of my favorite quilts, maybe because I won a blue ribbon for it?  It doesn't hurt.

Dreamy Hexagons Part 4

Here we are again "DREAMY HEXAGON'S", I'm still working away on it.  I hand appliqued all the Hexagon Frames onto the Cabbages, then hand sewed the Seven Frames together.  BTW (That's "By The Way" in case you are like me and didn't know) I used matching SILK Threads on the Hexi's and Holy Moly I LOVE IT!!  I am sooooooo spoiled now.

I cut the background for the center medallion out of Kaffe Fassett's "Juniper" fabric.  It is way cool!

Now for what the center medallion is going to look like when I get through sewing it down by hand applique' using - guess what?  SILK THREAD!!!

OK, now I'm ready for some more hand sewing before I move on to the first border.

Ahhhhhhh.......SPRING! In February?

 Ahhhhhhh, SPRING.  In February?  Wow, this dosen't happen in Reno for another few months.  The ground cover is blooming, Trees are budding, I even have Crocus up and soaking up the sun.

I just had to get a picture of the Iris Art Quilt I made in a Donna Greenwold class laying on the blooming ground cover in the front yard.  A picture perfect day!

I know, yes I know, we  have to have some more gray days before Spring is REALLY here, but look, just look how happy  this makes you feel.  I pity the people back East their Cold and Snow, but THIS, our Western SPRING makes me Happy!

And just in case  you wanted a close up of my Iris... Here it is.  Yep, I'm just a little bit proud of this one!

Dreamy Hexagon's Part Three

Finally back to the "Dreamy Hexagon's" the Medallion quilt I'm making .  As you saw, a few blogs ago ("Turn the water off!") my sewing room was flooded. It set me back a bit (a BIG bit!).  At least this first part of the quilt has a lot of handwork so I could continue on.   

Parts 1 and 2 of Dreamy Hexagon's were in my Blogs in January. We last talked of preparing the hexagons to sew into frames to go around cabbages in the fabric named Brasica, or you can use a floral fabric. My fabrics all come from a kit so I'll use the cabbages.  Plus, I just LOVE the cabbages in Brasica.  A little hint, I found the "Wonder Clips" very helpful in holding my Hexagon's together while I sewed. 

Here are my finished frames and my Brasica fabric.  I looked hard to find 7 different cabbages to cut out for the frames and then had a hard time deciding which color frame to use with each cabbage.  Can you say "INDICISIVE"?

I starched and pressed the hexagons, then removed the hexagon papers from the back.  As you can see in the Green frame I have one paper left to go.  I used little scissors and tweezers, it was like playing the game "OPERATION".  Don't kill the Hexi's.

I appliqued a frame to a cabbage (See the pink frame in the photo) using silk thread that matched. Now I have 6 more frames to go.  That should keep me busy for a while.  

Remember, this is a Medalion quilt so the fancy time consuming work is in the middle of the quilt.  After this, it should be a piece of cake!  Yeah, Sure......
